Welsh tenor Elgan Llŷr Thomas studied at the Royal Northern College of Music (of which he was recently appointed an Associate) and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama He is a former English National Opera Harewood Artist and a former Scottish Opera Emerging Artist. For English National Opera, his roles have included Prologue / Peter Quint The Turn of the Screw (at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre), Johnny Inkslinger Paul Bunyan (at Wilton’s Music Hall), Ralph Rackstraw HMS Pinafore and Nanki-Poo The Mikado.
Recent engagements have included François A Quiet Place for The Royal Ballet and Opera, London; Don José La Tragédie de Carmen for Buxton International Festival; the première of Conor Mitchell’s Bwystfilod Aflan / Unclean Beasts for Music Theatre Wales; Gérald Lakmé for Chelsea Opera Group; Count Almaviva Il barbiere di Siviglia for Opera Holland Park; Tom Rakewell The Rake’s Progress on tour with Swedish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Barbara Hannigan; A Child of Our Time in King’s College, Cambridge; and recitals for Ludlow English Song and Winchelsea Arts Festival. He also sings Beethoven Symphony No. 9 with Boston Symphony Orchestra (his North American debut); Beethoven Missa Solemnis with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at Newbury Spring Festival; Britten War Requiem with Bournemouth Symphony Chorus; Coleridge-Taylor Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast with Outcry Ensemble; and performs Daniel Kildane’s Cradle Song and Pulsing with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group at the Wigmore Hall. For Raymond Gubbay Ltd, he sang Beethoven Symphony No. 9 at London’s Barbican Hall, as well as appearing in Classical Spectacular at Symphony Hall, Birmingham, and New Year’s Day Gala at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
Engagements during 2025 / 2026 currently include Prologue / Peter Quint The Turn of the Screw for London’s Royal Ballet & Opera; Young Krishna in John Tavener’s Krishna for Grange Park Opera; Jack O’Brien Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny for English National Opera; Finzi For St Cecilia with Orchestra of Chelsea Opera Group; Handel Messiah with Lahti Symphony Orchestra; Haydn Nelson Mass with Singapore Symphony Orchestra; Mahler Das klagende Lied at Cheltenham Music Festival and with Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra; Fanny Mendelssohn Oratorium nach Bildern der Bibel with Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; and a New Year’s Day Prom for Raymond Gubbay Live at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
He made his debut at The Royal Opera, London, as First Noble of Brabant Lohengrin and his engagements have further included Lysander A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Nemorino L’elisir d’amore, Titorelli / Flogger / Berthold The Trial, Dr Richardson in the European première of Breaking the Waves, Rinuccio Gianni Schicchi and Fenton Falstaff for Scottish Opera; Dr Richardson Breaking the Waves for his début at Opéra Comique; Prunier La rondine for Opera North; Count Almaviva Il barbiere di Siviglia for Opéra national de Bordeaux and at Théâtre des Champs-Elysées; Cassio Otello and Steuermann Der fliegende Holländer for Grange Park Opera; and Duke of Mantua Rigoletto for Opera Holland Park. For Grange Park Opera, he also sang Gonzalve in the filmed version of L’heure espagnole, whilst as a member of Barbara Hannigan’s Equilibrium project, he has sung Tom Rakewell The Rake’s Progress at the Aldeburgh, Klara and Ojai Festivals.
His concert engagements have included Orbin in Elgar’s Caractacus with the Orchestra of Opera North, Messiah with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at London’s Royal Albert Hall, Karl Jenkins’ Mass for Peace and The Armed Man with Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by the composer, Mozart Requiem with Danish National Symphony Orchestra, A Child of Our Time with Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and a Gala Concert with the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra.
His discography includes Havergal Brian’s Faust for Dutton Epoch; Caractacus for Hyperion; and his debut song recital Unveiled with Iain Burnside and Craig Ogden (featuring music by Ruth Gipps, Benjamin Britten and Sir Michael Tippett and a Song Cycle of his own composing), launched at London’s Wigmore Hall, and available on Delphian.
