Welsh tenor Elgan Llyr Thomas is a current English National Opera Harewood Artist, where his roles so far have included Prologue/Peter Quint The Turn of the Screw, Johnny Inkslinger Paul Bunyan, Normanno Lucia di Lammermoor and as Nanki-Poo in The Mikado.
Recent highlights include Almaviva Il barbiere di Siviglia (Opéra national de Bordeaux, Theatre des Champs-Elysees); Dr Richardson in the European premiere of Missy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves (Scottish Opera/Opera Ventures) and Brighella Ariadne auf Naxos (Scottish Opera/Opera Holland Park) and Tom Rakewell The Rake’s Progress (Equilibrium Young Artists at Klarafestival/La Monnaie, the Ojai Music Festival in California and Aldeburgh Festival) conducted by Barbara Hannigan.
Thomas studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He is a former Scottish Opera Emerging Artist, during his time with them he sung Nemorino L’elisir d’amore and Titorelli/Flogger/Berthold The Trial and the Opera Highlights tour. He is a recipient of a 2017/18 Opera Awards Foundation Bursary and a Study Award from the Bryn Terfel Foundation and a past winner of the Stuart Burrows International Voice Award, Young Artist prize at Les Azuriales festival, Osborne Roberts Memorial Prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales and the Urdd National Eisteddfod Bryn Terfel Scholarship.
